This blog post is inspired by the incredible work highlighted in the article "Freedom on Two Wheels" on Yellowstone Valley Woman. Read the article about Jodie and Repedal Yellowstone Valley Women Magazine
Years ago, a simple garage sale find sparked a passion in Jodie Stovall. An old road bike, a desire for exercise – and just like that, a lifelong love affair with cycling began. From century rides to mountain biking adventures, Jodie embraced the freedom and joy of two wheels. But her passion extends far beyond personal enjoyment; it's a driving force behind a remarkable mission to empower others.
Jodie is the founder of Billings Environmentally Sustainable Transportation (BEST), a small but mighty nonprofit established in 2018. Through BEST's Repedal program, Jodie transformed donated bicycles into instruments of hope and independence for those in need.
A Bicycle Changes Everything
Take Marie, for example. Working long hours as a dishwasher, walking miles to and from her correctional pre-release center, her focus was entirely on rebuilding her life. When Jodie gifted her a refurbished bicycle, the impact was profound. More than just transportation, it was a symbol of progress, a tangible step towards a more independent future. Marie’s story is just one of many.
Repedal transformed partners with local social service agencies, providing bikes to individuals navigating challenging circumstances: recovery from addiction, transitioning out of correctional facilities, experiencing homelessness, or living in poverty. As Jodie says, "A bicycle can make all the difference." It offers safe, affordable transportation, opens doors to employment, and provides a sense of autonomy that is often desperately needed.
Empowerment Through Education and Community
Jodie's dedication doesn't stop at giving away bikes. She believes in empowering recipients with the knowledge to maintain their newfound freedom. Every Saturday at Gratitude in Action, a thrift store on South 30th Street, Repedal transformed hosts free bike maintenance workshops. These sessions are open to everyone, but they are particularly valuable for those who have received a Repedal transformed bike, teaching them essential skills like fixing a flat tire. "When people find they can do something for themselves, it’s really rewarding for everyone involved,” Jodie shares.
How You Can Be a Part of the Repedal Mission:
Jodie's efforts are largely sustained by community support. While she's never short on people who need bikes, the ongoing challenge lies in sourcing and repairing them to ensure they are safe and reliable.
- Donate Your Wheels: If you have a bicycle in good working condition you'd like to donate, drop it off at Gratitude in Action (10 S. 30th St.) during business hours.

Jodie Stovall's Repedal transformed program is a testament to the transformative power of a simple bicycle. It's about more than just transportation; it's about dignity, independence, and the belief that everyone deserves the freedom on two wheels. And with BEST Kiss Photobooth now on board, we're excited to capture even more moments of joy and connection within our community!
