Fat Tire Bike Assembly Guide
Welcome to Your Fat Tire Bike Assembly Guide
Congratulations on your new fat tire bike! This step-by-step guide will help you safely assemble your bike at home. Please read through all instructions before beginning.
Tools You'll Need
- 15mm wrench or adjustable wrench
- 4mm, 5mm, and 6mm Allen keys (hex wrenches)
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Tire pump with pressure gauge
- Bike grease (recommended)
- Torque wrench (optional but recommended)
Before You Start
Important: Carefully unpack all components and verify you have all parts listed in your packing list. Keep all packaging materials until assembly is complete in case you need to reference part numbers.
Step 1: Attach the Front Wheel
- Remove the front wheel from packaging and check that the tire is properly seated on the rim
- Remove the protective spacer from the front fork
- Slide the wheel axle into the fork dropouts, ensuring the disc brake rotor aligns with the brake caliper
- Tighten the quick-release lever or axle nuts securely (torque to 20-25 Nm if using a torque wrench)
- Spin the wheel to ensure it rotates freely without rubbing
Step 2: Install the Handlebars
- Remove the stem cap and loosen the stem bolts
- Insert the handlebars into the stem, aligning them perpendicular to the front wheel
- Center the handlebars and tighten the stem bolts evenly in a cross pattern
- Ensure the handlebars are secure but don't overtighten (torque to 5-8 Nm)
- Adjust handlebar angle to your comfort preference
Step 3: Attach the Pedals
- Identify left and right pedals (usually marked with "L" and "R")
- Apply a small amount of grease to the pedal threads
- Right pedal: Thread clockwise into the right crank arm
- Left pedal: Thread counter-clockwise into the left crank arm
- Tighten securely with a 15mm wrench (torque to 35-40 Nm)
Step 4: Install the Seat and Seatpost
- Insert the seatpost into the seat tube
- Adjust to your desired height (ensure the minimum insertion line is not visible)
- Align the seat with the frame
- Tighten the seatpost clamp securely
- Adjust seat angle if needed and tighten saddle clamp bolts
Step 5: Check and Inflate Tires
- Check that tires are properly seated on the rims
- Locate the recommended PSI range printed on the tire sidewall
- For fat tires, typical pressure is 5-15 PSI (much lower than standard bikes)
- Inflate to the lower end of the range for softer terrain, higher for pavement
- Check both valve stems are secure
Step 6: Brake Adjustment and Safety Check
- Squeeze both brake levers to ensure they engage properly
- Check that brake pads/rotors are not rubbing when wheels spin
- If disc brakes are rubbing, minor caliper adjustment may be needed
- Ensure brake cables are properly secured
Step 7: Final Safety Inspection
Before your first ride, check the following:
- All bolts and quick-releases are tight
- Wheels spin freely without wobbling
- Brakes engage smoothly and stop the wheels
- Handlebars are secure and aligned
- Seat is at proper height and secure
- Pedals are tight and rotate smoothly
- Chain is properly lubricated
- Gears shift smoothly (if applicable)
Break-In Period
After your first few rides, recheck all bolts and connections. Cables may stretch and components may settle, requiring minor adjustments.
